What is "My Thread"?

There are two pre-defined 'threads' through the database - provided by 'Quick links' at the bottom of each show page.  The first concentrates on Jazz at The Priestley and ignores all other shows.  The second provides a play thread - ignoring events that aren't plays.  This one can be set to your own preference - whether musicals, pantomimes, etc. are included, or whether only 'straight plays' are included.

There's now a facility to allow you to specify your own thread: you can include and exclude whichever of the seven show types you want.  It stores your preferences by using a cookie - so for it to work, you must have cookies turned on in your browser.

To configure your own personal thread, pick the show types you want to include in the table below, select either automatic or manual refresh, then 'push' the [Store My Selection] 'button'.

The difference between automatic and manual refresh is that with the automatic option, each time you follow your personal thread, the old cookie will be replaced by an up to date one, so that it persists as long as you follow your personal thread at least once every 4 months.  If, on the other hand, you choose the manual option, the cookie will expire at the end of your browser session, so you'll need to set your preferences again the next time you visit the site.

What are Cookies?

The Hyper-Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP), is the set of rules that define how Web pages are transfered across the Internet from Web Servers to Web Browsers.  HTTP itself is 'stateless' - which means that Web servers don't care what Webpages you've looked at before.  Most of the time that's fine, but occasionally, it isn't.  To deal with the occasions where it does matter (like following your own personal thread on this site), cookies were invented.  A cookie is a 'note', set by a Web server and stored by the Web browser on your computer, that holds information so that the server can find out what has happened before - and send you the right information.

Cookies have an 'expires' part, that tells your browser when to delete them.  By default, that happens at the end of the session - when you close down your browser.  However, it can be set to some time in the future, so that the server can find the information the next time you go to that Website.  The cookie set by the My Priestley server to define your personal thread has two versions.  'Automatic' resets the cookie each time you use your personal thread and expires 4 months after it is set.  'Manual' only sets a cookie when you set your preferences - and it expires at the end of the session.  You choose.

You are still in control!  Not only is it up to you whether you choose to have a cookie set by our Web server, but your browser stores its own, over-riding preferences.  First, you can simply turn cookies off.  If you use the form above, but your personal thread still includes all types of show, then that's probably why My Priestley is ignoring your preferences.  Second, you can set cookies to expire automatically at the end of every session - irrespective of the expiry times set in the cookies themselves.  If My Priestley seems to forget your preference between sessions here, despite choosing automatic refresh, then that's probably the problem.  Look at the settings in your browser and set them the way you want.
