What is "A Play"?

Well, a play is a story, told on stage, by actors playing roles.  You know, things like “Arsenic and Old Lace”, “A Midsummer Night's Dream”, or “Time and the Conways”.

Sure, but what about musicals like “Godspell” and pantomimes like “Dick Whittington”?  To some people, the difference between musicals and 'straight' plays is significant, while to others, it doesn't matter.

You got to this page by following the link between the play-thread quick-links.  This page is the first step in providing you with the choice of whether - for you - musicals count as plays.

Until now, they have, but if you turn cookies on in your browser*, then follow one of the [Musicals are not Plays ...] links below, we'll set a cookie on your computer that records a preference not to see musicals when you follow the Play thread.  The difference between the two is whether the cookie is refreshed automatically, or not.  With the automatic option, each time you follow the play thread an up to date cookie will be set, so that until you come back to this page and follow the [Musicals are Plays] link (which clears the cookie), musicals will be excluded from the play thread.  If you choose the manual option, you'll have to come back here to renew the cookie each time you visit the site.

If you are happy with the way things are, you can simply use the [Back] button on your browser, or follow the [No change] link below.  That simply takes you back to the show page you came from, leaving the cookie as it is.

What are Cookies?

The Hyper-Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP), is the set of rules that define how Web pages are transfered across the Internet from Web Servers, to Web Browsers.  HTTP itself is 'stateless' - which means that Web servers don't care what Webpages you've looked at before.  Most of the time that's fine, but occasionally, it isn't.  To deal with the occasions where it does matter (like being able to tell whether you've indicated a preference not to include musicals in the play thread on this site), cookies were invented.  A cookie is a 'note', set by a Web server and stored by the Web browser on your computer, that holds information so that the server can find out what has happened before.

Cookies have an 'expires' part, that tells your browser when to delete them.  By default, that happens at the end of the session - when you close down your browser.  However, it can be set to some time in the future, so that the server can find the information the next time you go to that Website.  The cookie set by the My Priestley server expires 4 months after you last follow the play thread.

You are still in control!  Not only is it up to you whether you choose to have the cookie set by our Web server, but your browser stores its own, overiding preferences.  First, you can simply turn cookies off.  If you use the [Musicals are not Plays] link above, but musicals are still included when you follow the play thread, then that's probably why My Priestley is ignoring your preference.  Second, you can set cookies to expire automatically at the end of every session - irrespective of the expiry times set in the cookies themselves.  If My Priestley seems to forget your preference between sessions here, then that's probably the problem.  Look at the settings in your browser and set them the way you want.

Note

Which shows are musicals?

Every show stored in our database has a code to indicate its 'type'.  Lots of pages on the site use that code to display an icon to tell you what type of show is being displayed.  As far as the play thread is concerned, the two that are relevant are:

Note that the 'Play' category includes events that contain two or more short plays, while the 'Musical' category includes pantomimes and so on.

There are 5 categories that the play thread always excludes: 3 types of pure music performance, plus two other categories.  These can be recognised by the following icons:
